Abstract

Time is one of the most fundamental concepts in human cognition and language. Although all people experience the passage of time, different languages conceptualize and express temporal relations in unique ways. Cognitive linguistics argues that language reflects how speakers perceive and organize reality rather than merely describing it. This article examines the conceptualization of time in English and Russian from a cognitive linguistic perspective. It analyzes conceptual metaphors, spatial representations of time, grammatical structures, and cultural influences shaping temporal expressions in both languages. The study demonstrates that while English and Russian share several universal cognitive models of time, they also exhibit significant differences resulting from historical development, cultural traditions, and linguistic systems.
