This article explores the expression of abolitionist ideas in the works of two prominent 19th-century American writers: Harriet Beecher Stowe and Mayne Reid. By analyzing “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” (1852) and “The Quadroon”(1856), the study examines how both authors used literature as a tool to oppose slavery and promote social justice. Stowe’s novel appeals to Christian morality and sentimentalism to expose the inhumanity of slavery and emphasize the moral responsibility of individuals to oppose it. Reid, on the other hand, employs romantic and dramatic elements to critique racial injustice, particularly focusing on the sexual exploitation and social isolation of mixed-race women in the American South. Despite their stylistic differences, both novels challenge the institution of slavery and call for a more humane and equitable society. The article concludes that these works not only reflect the social concerns of their time, but also played a significant role in shaping public opinion and advancing the abolitionist cause through literature.
